Echidnodella

Echidnodella Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 15(6): 422 (1918) [1917].

Index Fungorum number: IF 1731; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06761, 33 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytes on surface of leaves. Superficial hyphae radiating from the margins of the thyriothecia, lacking appressoria. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, scattered or gregarious, black, with a longitudinal slit. Hamathecium of 2–2.5 μm wide, hyaline pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, subglobose-clavate, sessile or with a short papilla-like pedicel, thickened at the apex, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping 2–4-seriate, conglobate, hyaline when immature, becoming brown to reddish brown at maturity, with rounded ends, uniseptate, strongly constricted at the central septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2014).

Type species: Echidnodella linearis (Syd. & P. Syd.) Syd.

Notes: Echidnodella resembles Lembosia but the superficial hyphae in Echidnodella lack appressoria and the hamathecium contains pseudo paraphyses. Hongsanan et al. (2014) placed Echidnodella in Asterinaceae based on morphology. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Echidnodella.
