Auerswaldiella

Auerswaldiella Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 12(3): 278 (1914).

Pathogenic or saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascostromata black, solitary, scattered, superficial on lower side, globose, rough, papillate, pulvinate, multiloculate, cells of ascostromata brown-walled textura angularis. Peridium of locules two-layered, outer layer composed of small heavily pigmented thick-walled cells of textura angularis, inner layer composed of hyaline thin-walled cells of textura angularis. Pseudoparaphyses hyphae-like, numerous, septate. Asci 8–spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindro-clavate, with a pedicel and an ocular chamber. Ascospores biseriate, hyaline to light brown, obovoid to ellipsoidal with rounded ends, aseptate, smooth–walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Liu et al. 2012).

Type species: Auerswaldiella puccinioides (Speg.) Theiss. & Syd.

Notes: Auerswaldiella is unique in having raised ascostromata on the surface of leaves including four to six locules with densely packed asci and unicellular hyaline to light brown ascospores. Molecular data is lacking and Auerswaldiella is currently in Botryosphaeriales genera incertae sedis.
