Phyllosticta

Phyllosticta Pers., Traité champ. Comest. (Paris): 55, 147 (1818).

Index Fungorum number: IF 9384; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00155 >2000 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), several species with molecular data.

Endophytic or pathogenic on leaves of a wide range of hosts. Sexual morph: Ascomata gregarious, circular, brown to black, coriaceous, with a central ostiole. Asci (6–)8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate, with a gelatinous pedicel and ocular chamber. Ascospores irregularly biseriate, hyaline, aseptate, ellipsoid to broadly fusoid, but much wider in the centre, smooth-walled, usually with mucilaginous pads at one or both ends or surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Pycnidia circular, brown to black, coriaceous, with a central ostiole. Peridium comprising brown cells of textura angularis. Conidiogenous cells lining wall of pycnidium, phialidic, cylindrical, hyaline. Conidia hyaline, ellipsoidal, aseptate, smooth-walled, surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath bearing a single apical appendage.

Type species: Phyllosticta convallariae Pers.

Notes: Previously, Phyllosticta was accommodated in Phyllostictales, Phyllostictaceae (Seaver 1922). Later, Phyllosticta was referred to Botryosphaeriaceae by several authors (Schoch et al. 2006, Crous et al. 2006, Liu et al. 2012) based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses. Wikee et al. (2013) restudied Phyllosticta and resurrected Phyllostictaceae. Phyllosticta is a diverse genus and comprise species complexes that need further investigation (Norphanphoun et al. 2020). Molecular markers available for Phyllosticta are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, GADPH, TEF-1 and RPB2.
