Stigmatodothis

Stigmatodothis Syd. & P. Syd., Philipp. J. Sci., C, Bot. 9(2): 173 (1914).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5250; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05149, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on living leaves, visible as black dots. Hyphae superficial, brown, branched. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia hypophyllous, amphigenous, scattered to dense, circular, black, with a central circular ostiole. Upper wall dark brown, comprising radial arrangement, meandrous, compact hyphae, lacking a basal plate. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, ellipsoid to clavate. Ascospores overlapping, 2–3 seriate, cylindrical, 3-septate, mostly not constricted at septa, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Sydow and Sydow 1914).

Type species: Stigmatodothis palawanensis Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Stigmatodothis is characterised by superficial, brown, branched hyphae, ellipsoid to clavate asci and 2–3 seriate, cylindrical, 3-septate ascospores. Arx and Müller (1975) reviewed Stigmatodothis and provided an updated description of the genus. Zeng et al. (2019) re-examined the holotype specimen (S F6523) and transferred Stigmatodothis to Capnodiales genera incertae sedis based on the brown upper wall and hyaline, multiseptateascospores. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the correct placement of Stigmatodothis within Capnodiales.
