Aurantiascoma

Aurantiascoma Thambug. & K.D. Hyde, in Thambugala et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0348-3, [51] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551262; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00834, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead branches. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary or aggregated in small clusters, erumpent to superficial, pyriform to subglobose, dark brown, ostiolate, ostiolar area orange. Ostiole central, rounded, usually raised, papillate. Hamathecium comprising 1–2 μm wide, numerous, branched, septate, cellular pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical-clavate, with a short pedicel, rounded at the apex, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores uni to bi-seriate, partially overlapping, hyaline, fusiform, 1-(–3)-septate, one of the central cells broader than others, constricted at the central septum, smooth-walled, surrounded by a thin mucilaginous sheath that extends at the apex of the spores. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009).

Type species: Aurantiascoma minimum (Mugambi, A.N. Mill. & Huhndorf) Thambugala & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Aurantiascoma is characterised by erumpent to superficial, pyriform to subglobose ascomata, cylindrical-clavate asci and hyaline, fusiform, 1-(–3)-septate ascospores. Aurantiascoma minimum was previously known as Misturatosphaeria minima. In the phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2015), M. minima clustered in a distinct clade in Floricolaceae and hence, was accommodated in the new genus Aurantiascoma. Aurantiascoma differs from Misturatosphaeria in having an orange ostiolar area. Aurantiascoma is a distinct and well-defined genus in Teichosporaceae. Molecular markers available for Aurantiascoma are ITS, LSU and SSU.
