Brefeldiella
Brefeldiella Speg., Boln Acad. nac. Cienc. Córdoba 11(4): 558 (1889).
Index Fungorum number: IF 648; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07914, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Foliar epiphytes or parasites on leaves of various hosts. Sexual morph: Thallus relatively large, circular or irregular, or spreading as root-like structures across leaf surface, brown to black, extremely thin, covering some ascomata, and covering host tissue with a skin-like layer; cells of thallus consisting of a single layer of somewhat radially arranged cylindrical to cuboid cells, each cell distinct. Thyriothecia circular in outline, flattened, thin-walled, developing under thallus, with numerous asci. Ostioles central. Hamathecium comprising of asci, pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindric-clavate, short pedicellate, apically rounded with small ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, hyaline, oblong-ellipsoidal, 1- septate, upper cell wider, shorter, and more rounded than thinner and longer lower cell, thin-walled, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde et al. 2013).
Type species: Brefeldiella brasiliensis Speg.
Notes: Brefeldiella is characterised by circular or irregular thallus, flattened, thin-walled thyriothecia, fissitunicate, cylindric-clavate, short pedicellate asci and hyaline, oblong-ellipsoidal, uniseptate ascospores. Eriksson (1981) examined the type specimen B. brasiliensis from LPS but the specimen has numerous immature ascomata. Hyde et al. (2013) considered Brefeldiella in Brefeldiellaceae but the older name Trichopeltinaceae has priority. Hongsanan et al. (2014) synonymized Brefeldiellaceae with Trichopeltinaceae as both families accommodate species with thallus that form a neatly arranged, “skin-like”, palisade of cells over a flattened thyriothecia, lack pseudoparaphyses, have bitunicate and saccate asci and ellipsoidal, muriform or trans-septate and hyaline to brown ascospores. Molecular data is lacking. Brefeldiella is a distinct genus in Trichopeltinaceae. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
