Asterodothis

Asterodothis Theiss., Annls mycol. 10(2): 179 (1912).

Index Fungorum number: IF 420; Facesoffungi number: FoF 09026, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on the upper surface of the leaves, forming blackened circular areas with radiating margins. Superficial hyphae with parallel radiations, with intermittent darker nodes, appressoria not observed. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia solitary or scattered, superficial around centre of hyphae group, solitary or scattered, easily removed from host surface, globose to subglobose, comprising brown to dark brown walled cells, rounded at the margin, ostiole centre, with a poorly developed basal layer. Asci and ascospores not observed in Kalchbr and Cooke (1880) and Hongsanan et al. (2014). Asexual morph: Asterostromina solaris Bat. & A.F. Vital. Conidiophores conical to cylindrical, cup shaped. Conidia (1-)2-septate, constricted and dark at the septa, apical cell rounded and broader than lower cell, sometimes apical cell narrower and broader than lower cell, brown to dark brown (adapted from von Arx and Müller 1975, Hongsanan et al. 2014).

Type species: Asterodothis solaris (Kalchbr. & Cooke) Theiss.

Notes: Asterodothis is characterised by solitary or scattered, superficial, globose to subglobose thyriothecia. Hosagoudar et al. (2001) placed Asterodothis in Asterinaceae based on the radiating stromata, and 4-celled conidia occurring in Oleaceae and Celastraceae. Hongsanan et al. (2014) re-examined the holotype specimen of Asterodothis solaris (S-F49200) but could not observe the asci and ascospores. Hongsanan et al. (2014) referred Asterodothis to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. More herbarium specimens should be studied and fresh collections are needed to clarify the generic placement of Asterodothis.
