Byssogene

Byssogene Syd., Philipp. J. Sci. 21(2): 144 (1922).

Index Fungorum number: IF 703; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12145, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Colonies on living leaves, hypophyllous, sparse, not aggregated, causing no disease symptoms. Internal mycelium indistinct. External mycelium hypogenous, anastomosing, net-forming, slightly undulate, composed of pale brown, flattened, thin-walled, septate hyphae, smooth. Sexual morph: Ascomata pseudothecia hypophyllous, superficial, solitary, discoid, non-ostiolate, black, margin raised, outer wall of textura globulosa gray becoming hyaline, inner wall pseudoparenchymatose, 6-cell thick, dark brown. Asci bitunicate, ovate, oblong to obclavate. Ascospores cylindrical to ellipsoid, dictyoseptate, subhyaline, guttulate, smooth. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Byssogene wilsoniae in da Silva et al. 2016).

 Type species: Byssogene amboinensis Syd.

Notes: Byssogene is characterised by hypophyllous, sparse colonies, hypogenous, anastomosing external mycelium, hypophyllous, superficial pseudothecia, bitunicate, ovate, oblong to obclavate asci and cylindrical to ellipsoid, dictyoseptate, subhyaline ascospores. Byssogene resembles members of Saccardiaceae in having dictyoseptate, hyaline ascospores, discoid ascomata and superficial brown mycelium (da Silva et al. 2016). da Silva et al. (2016) added Byssogene wilsoniae found from leaves of Dimorphandra wilsonii in Brazil. Byssogene wilsoniae differs from B. amboinensis in having longer and broader asci and longer ascospores. The systematic position of Byssogene is uncertain. Molecular data is lacking for Byssogene. Byssogene is in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Byssogene.
