Callebaea

Callebaea Bat., in Batista et al., Brotéria, N.S. 31(2): 100 (1962).

Index Fungorum number: IF 327245; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12147, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Parasitic on leaves. Mycelium superficial, irregularly scattered. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia circular, scattered, superficial, membraneous, brownish, lower peridium poorly developed easily removed from the host surface, with a central irregular ostiole; in section lenticular. Upper wall comprising an irregular meandering arrangement of compact hyphae. Hamathecium comprising asci, pseudoparaphyses not obvious. Asci immature and ascospores not observed. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Chomnunti et al. 2011).

Type species: Callebaea rutideae (Hansf.) Bat.

Notes: Callebaea is characterised by superficial, irregularly scattered mycelium, and circular, scattered, superficial, membraneous thyriothecia, upper wall comprising an irregular meandering arrangement of compact hyphae (Chomnunti et al. 2011). Callebaea rutideae was previously known as Microcallis rutideae but was not congeneric with the type species of Microcallis, M. phoebes. Hansford (1947) placed Microcallis rutideae in Chaetothyriaceae. Chomnunti et al. (2011) examined the type specimen of Microcallis rutideae (K(M) 164029) but found only a few flattened ascomata on the host surface which lacked mature asci and ascospores. Chomnunti et al. (2011) suggested that Callebaea might belong to Micropeltidaceae based on the morphology of the thyriothecium. Sequence data is not available for Callebaea so the generic position is doubtful. Callebaea is in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Callebaea.
