Coccochora

Coccochora Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 118: 1513 (1909).

Index Fungorum number: IF 1136; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12170, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Parenchyma developing, erupting only in the middle. Stroma overlying the epidermis (apart from the central part). Asci 8-spored. Paraphyses filamentous. Ascospores two-celled, upper cell very coarse and colored, lower very small, colorless. Loculis one or a few. Asexual morph: see below (adapted from Höhnel 1910).

Type species: Coccochora quercicola (Henn.) Höhn.

Notes: Coccochora is characterised by superficial, carbonaceous, dark bright stromata, shackled perithecia comprising globose, rounded cells, abundant hyaline paraphyses. Coccochora is placed in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis due to inadequate diagnoses of the species and lack of sequence data. Currently, there is no recent data on Coccochora. Epitypification and molecular phylogeny are needed to confirm the placement of Coccochora and its species. We illustrate two species, C. quercicola (≡ Auerswaldia quercicola) (TNS: F 232146) and C. kusanoi (TNS: F 232139).
