Crauatamyces

Crauatamyces Viégas, Bragantia 4(1-6): 158, Errata 2 (1944).

Index Fungorum number: IF 1281; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12175, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Stroma black, smooth, pyriform, dense, aggregated, firm, numerous, surrounding the branches of the plant, appearing as isolated, uniting at the base. Locules broad-based, sterile, elevated. Stroma uniloculate. Stromatal base wide, cylindrical, with a clear central part, comprising pseudo-parenchymatous cells. Locules globose, or depressed globose opening through an apical pore. Apical pore more or less narrow. Asci clavate, thickened at apex, 8-spored. Ascospores colored, elongated, cylindrical, multiseptate, in some septa exhibiting constriction, blunt ends. Paraphysoid numerous guttulate filiform. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Viégas 1944).

 Type species: Crauatamyces eupatorii Viégas

Notes: Crauatamyces is characterised by flat, thickly aggregated, pyriform, black stromata, distinct unilocular stroma with each locule corresponding to a pore. At times the entire upper half of the stroma is colored and the locules are immersed in a dark tissue. Ascospores are elongated-cylindrical, multi-septate, with some septa exhibiting constriction, obtuse ends and drops of refringent substance in their cells. Numerous paraphyses can be observed. Viégas (1944) suggested the placement of Crauatamyces in Montagnellaceae based on morphology. Cultures and sequences are lacking. Fresh specimens with DNA sequence data are needed to resolve the taxonomic placement of Crauatamyces.
