Crotone
Crotone Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 13(5/6): 629 (1915).
Index Fungorum number: IF 1297; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12177, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on lower surface of leaves of dicotyledons. Sexual morph: Ascostromata large-sized, solitary, scattered, or in small groups, erumpent to nearly superficial, with basal wall remaining immersed in host tissue, flat globose to subglobose. Locules small-sized, globose to subglobose, forming one layer near the surface of ascostromata, area between locules of ascostromata filled with heavily pigmented, thick-walled cells of textura angularis. Peridium composed of heavily pigmented, thick-walled cells of textura angularis, cells of ascostromata larger, hyaline and walls thinner. Hamathecium appears to lack pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, broadly subclavate to obclavate, without pedicel. Ascospores uniseriate, 2-seriateto 4-seriate, broadly clavate, narrowly fusoid to fusoid with broadly to narrowly rounded ends, brown, uniseptate, constricted at the septum, the upper cell often longer and broader than the lower one, rough-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2011).
Type species: Crotone drimydis (Lév.) Theiss. & Syd.
Notes: Crotone is characterised by large-sized, solitary, scattered ascostromata, broadly subclavate to obclavate asci lacking pedicel, and broadly clavate, narrowly fusoid to fusoid ascospores. Zhang et al. (2011) re-examined the syntype of C. drimydis (K(M): 143929) and suggested that it might belong to Dothideaceae, Elsinoaceae or Myriangiaceae based on the occurrence of ascostromata with ascomata as a single layer. Crotone resembles members of Elsinoaceae or Myriangiaceae in having saccate asci. Molecular data is lacking for Crotone so the taxonomic placement is still ambiguous. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to clarify the taxonomic placement of Crotone.
