Cryomyces
Cryomyces Selbmann et al., Stud. Mycol. 51: 19 (2005).
Index Fungorum number: IF 500192; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12179, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.
Imperfect fungi, hyphomycetes. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium, when present, meristematic or composed of short hyphae septate, scarcely branched, brown, thick walled, showing torulose organisation. Torulose hyphae and meristematic mycelium often resolved into 1-celled conidia globose, dry, acrogenous when organized in torulose acropetal chains, very thick walled, coated by fragmented incrustations, produced by schyzolitic secession, enteroblastically germinating (adapted from Selbmann et al. 2005).
Type species: Cryomyces antarcticus Selbmann, de Hoog, Mazzaglia, Friedmann & Onofri
Notes: Cryomyces is characterised by hyphae and meristematic mycelium forming globose, dry, acrogenous conidia. Cryomyces resembles Sarcinomyces in forming chlamydospore-like structures but differs in that the conidia are produced by annellated conidiogenous cells. Selbmann et al. (2005) reported that Cryomyces is paraphyletic to Phaeotheca in their phylogenetic analysis based on SSU and ITS but with low statistical support. Cryomyces could not confidently be aligned to any genera. Selbmann et al. (2005) pointed out that Cryomyces might be among the older genera of the Dothideomycetidae. Cryomyces is in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis and may warrants familial rank in the future. Molecular markers available for Cryomyces include ITS, LSU and SSU.
