Cyclotheca

Cyclotheca Theiss., Annls mycol. 12(1): 70 (1914).

Index Fungorum number: IF 1379; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12181, 17 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Stromata hypophyllous, flattened, membranous, coriaceous, thin, rigid, opaque, black, ostiolate, undifferentiated. Sexual morph: Locules numerous with round ostiole. Asci cylindrical-clavate, rounded at the top, below with a short stipate, 8-spored. Ascospores oblique, monostic, subdistichous, fusoid, rounded at the apex, tapering at the base, uniseptate, not constricted or viscous. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Polystomella miconiae in Sydow & sydow 1901).

Type species: Cyclotheca miconiae (Syd. & P. Syd.) Theiss.

Notes: Cyclotheca is characterised by cylindrical-obclavate hyphae, holothallic, narrow cylindrical to cylindrical conidiogenous cells, schizolytic conidial secession and thallic-arthric, solitary, polymorphic conidia. The genus name is illegitimate (Art. 53.1) since it is a homonym of Cyclotheca Moq. 1849 (Gyrostemonaceae). Müller and Arx (1962) described Cyclotheca as C. melastomatis (Pat.) Arx which is an earlier epithet for C. miconiae. Cyclotheca resembles members of Microthyriaceae in having a distinct central ostiole, inconspicuous hyphae penetrating the leaf cells and apiosporous ascospores. Cyclotheca differs from other members of Microthyriaceae in having apiospores lacking appendages. Wu et al. (2011) suggested that one of the synonyms of Cyclotheca (e.g. Synpeltis Syd. & P. Syd., Synostomella Syd.) might be an alternative to clarify the status of Cyclotheca but this requires in-depth studies. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Cyclotheca.
