Dubitatio

Dubitatio Speg., Anal. Soc. cient. argent. 12(5): 212 (1882).

Index Fungorum number: IF 1711; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12200, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata immersed with white crystalline rim at the surface, multiloculate. Ostioles eccentric. Paraphyses abundant. Asci bitunicate, cylindrical. Ascospores dark brown, usually one-septate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Rossman et al. 1999).

 Type species: Dubitatio dubitationum Speg.

Notes: Dubitatio was introduced by Spegazzini (1881) with D. dubitationum as type species. Dubitatio is characterised by white crystalline ascomata, eccentric ostiole, cylindrical asci and dark brown, usually one-septate ascospores. Spegazzini (1881) considered Dubitatio to be related to Sphaeriaceae and Nectriaceae. Rossman et al. (1999) re-examined the type specimen of D. dubitationum and suggested that Dubitatio might be related to Dothivalsaria or members of Massariaceae or might warrant new familial rank. Muller and Arx (1962) considered Dubitatio as a synonym of Passerinula. Dubitatio morphologically resembles Passerinula but differs in stroma and ascospores characters. Molecular data is lacking for Dubitatio. Dubitatio is currently placed in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Dubitatio.
