Govindua

Govindua Bat. & H. Maia, Revta Biol., Lisb. 2: 95 (1960).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2122; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12643, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Biotrophic on the upper surface of leaves, many small ascomata gregarious and forming black spots. Mycelium superficial, without lateral hyphopodia. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia circular, solitary or clustered in small groups, superficial, carbonaceous, black, basal peridium poorly developed, without a central ostiolar opening, rupturing at maturity to release ascospores; in section lenticular. Upper wall comprising cuboid cells, radiating from the centre and becoming larger towards the outer rim. Peridium a single substratum, composed of brown cells of compact textura angularis. Hamathecium of parallel asci in mucilage inclined towards the center, pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, globose to sub-globose or sphaerical, apedicellate, with a flat ocular chamber, ascus gel staining blue in IKI. Ascospores 1-2-seriate, broadly ellipsoidal, hyaline, 2-celled, with the upper cell smaller than lower cell, with rough ornamentation, brownish with age. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Batista & Maia 1960).

Type species: Govindua shoreae Bat. & H. Maia

Notes: Govindua is characterised by circular, solitary thyriothecia, fissitunicate, globose to sub-globose asci and 1−2-seriate, broadly ellipsoidal, hyaline, two-celled ascospores. Batista and Maia (1960) placed Govindua in Asterinaceae. Hawksworth et al. (1995) and Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) referred Govindua to Microthyriaceae. Wu et al. (2011) examined the holotype of G. shoreae (URM 15866) and suggested that Govindua might belong to Asterinaceae based on the superficial hyphae, lack of pseudoparaphyses, saccate asci with remnants of gel staining blue in IKI and two-celled ascospores. Molecular data is lacking for Govindua. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Govindua.
