Hansfordiopsis
Hansfordiopsis Bat., Publicações Inst. Micol. Recife 56: 407 (1959).
Index Fungorum number: IF 2221; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05162, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, epiphyllous, thin, flat, dark-brown, circular, consisting of very pale yellowish-brown wavy-reticulate hyphae, indistinctly septate, in a single layer, agglutinate to form a pellicle which extends over the whole ascoma, becoming darker towards the centre. Hyphae covers a loose weft of tangled hyaline hyphae, thick, much branched in which the asci are embedded singly, though rather closely apparently each in its own locule. Asci globose, sessile, thin-walled, 8-spored. Ascospores conglobate to nearly parallel, clavulate, uniseptate, slightly constricted becoming darker brown when fully mature, the upper cell wider than the lower and sub globose, the lower slightly attenuate to the rounded base. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Microthyriella phaeospora in Hansford 1954).
Type species: Hansfordiopsis phaeospora (Hansf.) Bat.
Notes: Hansfordiopsis is characterised by superficial, epiphyllous, thin, flat, dark brown thyriothecia, globose, sessile, thin-walled asci and conglobate to nearly parallel, clavulate, uniseptate ascospores. Zeng et al. (2019) re-examined the holotype of H. phaeospora but reported a mislabeling error since the specimen was Enterographa bella, a lichenized Arthoniales. It seems that that the type specimen is lost and an epitype must be collected from the type host and location. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) referred Hansfordiopsis to Micropeltidaceae. Molecular data is lacking for Hansfordiopsis. Hyde et al. (2013) excluded Hansfordiopsis from Micropeltidaceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) referred Hansfordiopsis to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Hansfordiopsis.
