Hyalosphaera
Hyalosphaera F. Stevens, Trans. Ill. St. Acad. Sci. 10: 172 (1917).
Index Fungorum number: IF 2393; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12240, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), molecular data available for an unknown species.
Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary or scattered, globose to subglobose, smooth. Peridium composed of smooth-walled, hyaline cells. Pseudoparaphyses absent. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, narrowly obovoid, with thickened, short, furcate pedicel. Ascospores filiform to subcylindrical, multiseptate with narrow rounded ends, yellow to chestnut-brown. Asexual morph: unknown (adapted from Ariyawansa et al. 2014).
Type species: Hyalosphaera miconiae F. Stevens
Notes: Hyalosphaera is characterised by superficial, solitary or scattered, globose to subglobose ascomata, narrowly obovoid asci and filiform to subcylindrical, multiseptateascospores. Hyalosphaera is morphologically similar to Corynelia in having apothecioid ascomata and ascospores released by deliquescence of the whole ascomata (Benny et al. 1985). Ariyawansa et al. (2014) examined the holotype specimen of H. miconiae (BPI 635922) and suggested that Hyalosphaera might be better placed in Coryneliales. Ariyawansa et al. (2014) retained Hyalosphaera in Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), Kirk et al. (2013) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) also listed Hyalosphaera in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Hyalosphaera. Only LSU sequence data is available for an unknown Hyalosphaera sp. in GenBank.
