Blasdalea
Blasdalea Sacc. & P. Syd., Syll. Fung. (Abelini) 16: 634 (1902).
Index Fungorum number: IF 592; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07922, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Parasitic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascostromata stromatic, with ring-like or linear loculus; subcuticular hyphae inconspicuous, scutate. Peridium composed of pigmented thick-walled cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising hyaline, filiform pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, oblong to clavate, short pedicellate or apedicellate, apically rounded with a well-developed ocular chamber, not arranged in a ring surrounding a central column of sterile tissues. Ascospores hyaline, subglobose. Asexual morph: Pycnidia up to 300 μm diam., occurring on leaf surface, subglobose, dark brown to black, shiny, solitary, gregarious, papilla. Conidiophores up to 10 μm long, hyaline. Conidiogenous cells hyaline, cylindrical, holoblastic. Conidia ellipsoidal or rarely subglobose, 1- celled, brown to dark brown, with colorless or light brownish band around median cell, smooth-walled (adapted from Hyde et al. 2013).
Type species: Blasdalea disciformis (Rehm) Sacc. & P. Syd.
Notes: Blasdalea is characterised by stromatic ascostromata, oblong to clavate, short pedicellate asci and hyaline, subglobose ascospores. The asexual morph is characterised by subglobose, dark brown to black pycnidia, hyaline, cylindrical, holoblastic conidiogenous cells, ellipsoidal or rarely subglobose, 1-celled, brown to dark brown conidia. Arx and Müller (1954) illustrated B. disciformis and reported cylindrical asci and abundant pseudoparaphyses and ascomata opening by a large ostiole. Hyde et al. (2013) examined the holotype specimen of B. disciformis (S F793) but did not find the sexual morph. Blasdalea is currently a distinct genus in Vizellaceae but molecular data is needed to confirm this taxonomic placement.
