Cirsosiopsis

Cirsosiopsis Butin & Speer, Sydowia 31(1–6): 10 (1979) [1978].

Index Fungorum number: IF 1068; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08113, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Parasitic on the upper surface of leaves. Superficial hyphae absent. Sexual morph: Ascostromata solitary to gregarious, or some in groups, superficial, carbonaceous, strongly flattened, discoid or pulvinate to elongate, opening by irregular disintegration at the centre. Hamathecium with 2–3 µm wide pseudoparaphyses, arranged around, and longer than asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, or globose to subglobose, short pedicellate, with a distinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid to ovate, ends rounded, uniseptate, constricted at the septum, thick-walled with a sheath, with two angular guttules, wall smooth. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wu et al. 2014).

Type species: Cirsosiopsis violacescens Butin & Speer

Notes: Cirsosiopsis is characterised by solitary to gregarious ascostromata, cylindrical, or globose to subglobose asci and hyaline, ellipsoid to ovate, uniseptate ascospores. Butin and Speer (1978) treated Cirsosiopsis in Microthyriaceae. Wu et al. (2014) examined the holotype specimen of C. violacescens and transferred Cirsosiopsis to Parmulariaceae based on its morphological resemblance with Parmularia, especially the carbonaceous and pulvinate ascostromata. The asexual morph of C. violacescens is unknown. Molecular data is lacking for Cirsosiopsis, hence, placement of the genus in Parmulariaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the correct placement of the genus.
