Crassiparies

Crassiparies M. Matsum., K. Hiray. & Kaz. Tanaka, in Li et al., Fungal Diversity 78: 63 (2016).

Index Fungorum number: IF 815294; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02024, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead twigs of Acer sp. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, sometimes in groups of 2–3, immersed to superficial, hemispherical, ostiolate. Peridium composed of 2 strata; outer stratum composed of brown, angular cells; inner stratum composed of hyaline, prismatic cells. Hamathecium comprising numerous, cellular, septate pseudoparaphyses. Asci 4-spored, fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, pedicellate. Ascospores 1–2-seriate, hyaline, broadly fusiform, straight, thick-walled, with a submedian septum, uniseptate, smooth-walled. Spermatia subglobose to elliptic, hyaline, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Li et al. 2016).

Type species: Crassiparies quadrisporus Matsumura, K. Hiray. & Kaz. Tanaka

Notes: Crassiparies is characterised by scattered immersed to superficial, hemispherical, ostiolate ascomata, cylindrical to clavate, pedicellate asci and 1–2-seriate, hyaline, broadly fusiform ascospores. Crassiparies resembles Massarina in having cylindrical, bitunicate asci and broadly fusiform, uniseptate, hyaline ascospores but can be differentiated in having thick ascomatal walls, ascomatal necks without clypei, and 4-spored asci (Bose 1961; Aptroot 1998). Massarina is a distinct genus in Massarinaceae while Crassiparies forms a distinct lineage between Massarineae and Pleosporineae (Hyde et al. 2013, Li et al. 2016). ITS, LSU, SSU, TEF1 and RPB2 sequence data is available in GenBank for Crassiparies. Tanaka et al. (2017) accommodated Crassiparies in Neohendersoniaceae based on phylogenetic evidence. Crassiparies is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Neohendersoniaceae.
