Fusiformiseptata

Fusiformiseptata W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde, in Dong et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-020-00463-5, [195] (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 557938; Facesoffungi number: FoF 09283 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on decaying wood submerged in freshwater. Sexual morph: Ascomata black, scattered, immersed with a neck erumpent through host surface, ellipsoidal or obovoid, coriaceous, ostiolate. Neck subcylindrical or irregular, with flattened top, thick-walled, composed of two-layered peridium, with orange pigment. Peridium comprising several layers of dark brown, thick-walled, compressed cells of textura epidermoidea or irregular cells. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, cellular, broadly filiform, hyaline, septate, branched. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate, short pedicellate, apically rounded with well-developed ocular chamber. Ascospores biseriate, fusiform, hyaline, septate, asymmetrical, thin-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Dong et al. 2020).

Type species: Fusiformiseptata crocea W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Fusiformiseptata is characterised by black, scattered, immersed ascomata, subcylindrical or irregular neck, broadly filiform, hyaline, septate pseudoparaphyses, clavate, short pedicellate asci and fusiform, hyaline, septate, asymmetrical, thin-walled ascospores. Fusiformiseptata differs from other genera in Pleosporales in having a prominent neck with orange pigment on the inner wall and an arrow-shaped base on the ascomata (Dong et al. 2020). In the phylogenetic analysis of Dong et al. (2020), Fusiformiseptata formed a distinct lineage but the familial rank could not be determined. Fusiformiseptata is placed in Pleosporales genera incertae sedis. More collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Fusiformiseptata. Molecular markers available for Fusiformiseptata include ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
