Aquatisphaeria
Aquatisphaeria W.L. Li, N.G. Liu & Jian K. Liu, in Li et al., Phytotaxa 513 (2) (2021).
Index Fungorum number: IF 839207; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11750, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on submerged decaying wood in freshwater habitats. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies on natural substratum effuse, scattered, dark brown to black. Mycelium partly immersed, partly superficial, septate, branched, smooth, sub-hyaline to light brown. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, solitary, cylindrical, straight or slightly flexuous, mid to dark brown, septate, unbranched. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, determinate, integrated, terminal, subcylindrical, brown, truncate at the apex. Conidia acrogenous, solitary, subglobose or turbinate, pale olive green to dark brown, muriform, dictyoseptate, smooth-walled, with cylindrical appendages (adapted from Li et al. 2021).
Type species: Aquatisphaeria thailandica W.L. Li, D.F. Bao & Jian K. Liu
Notes: Aquatisphaeria is characterised by scattered, dark brown to black colonies, macronematous, mononematous, solitary conidiophores, terminal, subcylindrical, brown conidiogenous cells and acrogenous, solitary, sub globose or turbinate conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Li et al. (2021) based on combined LSU, ITS and SSU sequence data, Aquatisphaeria formed a distinct lineage within Tetraplosphaeriaceae. Aquatisphaeria resembles members of Tetraplosphaeriaceae in having monoblastic conidiogenous cells and solitary, subglobose or turbinate conidia with filiform or horn-like appendages (Li et al. 2021). Aquatisphaeria differs from Pseudotetraploa, Quadricrura, Tetraploa and Triplosphaeria in having macronematous, mononematous conidiophores while the other genera lack conidiophores (Tanaka et al. 2009, Li et al. 2021). Aquatisphaeria differs from Ernakulamia in that the latter has monotretic conidiogenous cells (Delgado et al. 2017, Li et al. 2021). Aquatisphaeria is also similar to Shrungabeeja in having monoblastic conidiogenous cells and macronematous conidiophores but differs in that the conidiophores of the latter genus are three to six times longer than those of Aquatisphaeria (Zhang et al. 2012, Dong et al. 2020, Li et al. 2021). Aquatisphaeria is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-supported genus in Tetraplosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Aquatisphaeria include ITS, LSU and SSU.
