Caproventuria

Caproventuria U. Braun, Monogr. Cercosporella, Ramularia Allied Genera (Phytopath. Hyphom.) 2: 396 (1998).

Index Fungorum number: IF 27882; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06357, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata non-stromatic, subglobose, ampulliform, obpyriform, urceolate, papillate, ostiolate, pseudoparaphysate, membranaceous, dark, setose throughout. Setae dark brown, aseptate, simple or occasionally forked, apex acute, smooth, wall thickened below, but thin-walled towards the apex. Peridium pseudoparenchymatous, composed of angular to rounded, dark brown cells. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, numerous, subclavate to cylindrical. Ascospores monostichous or distichous, ellipsoid-ovoid, with a single submedian septum, mostly somewhat constricted at the septum, smooth, yellowish olivaceous. Asexual morph: Pseudocladosporium brevicatenatum (adapted from Braun 1998, Zhang et al. 2011).

Type species: Caproventuria hanliniana (U. Braun & Feiler) U. Braun

Notes: Caproventuria is characterised by non-stromatic, subglobose, ampulliform ascomata, subclavate to cylindrical asci and monostichous or distichous, ellipsoid-ovoid ascospores. Braun (1998) considered Caproventuria as a genus distinct from Venturia based on its saprobic life style and Pseudocladosporium asexual morphic state. Crous et al. (2007), on the other hand, treated Pseudocladosporium as a synonym of Fusicladium sensu lato based on phylogenetic evidence of LSU and ITS sequence analyses. Zhang et al. (2011) did not agree with Crous et al. (2007) as the generic concepts of Venturia and Fusicladium were too narrow. Zhang et al. (2011) and Hongsanan et al (2020b) considered Pseudocladosporium as the asexual morph of Caproventuria and tentatively placed the genus in Venturiaceae based on phylogenetic analyses. In the analyses of Shen et al. (2020), Caproventuria nests in a well-supported Tyrannosorus clade.  Shen et al. (2020) considered Caproventuria as a synonym of Tyrannosorus. The latter genus has priority as Tyrannosorus is older than Caproventuria. We follow the latest treatment of Shen et al. (2020) and treat Caproventuria as a synonym of Tyrannosorus. Molecular markers available for Caproventuria are ITS and LSU.
