Apiosporina

Apiosporina Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. - naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 119: 439 (1910).

Index Fungorum number: IF 266; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06354, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Parasitic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata small, gregarious, superficial, globose to subglobose, developing on a dark hyphal mass, easily removed from the substrate, small papillate and ostiolate. Hypha pale brown to dark brown, branched, septate. Peridium thin-walled, composed of three layers, dark brown to hyaline cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium rare, septate, cellular pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate to narrowly obclavate, cylindrical, with a short, thick, furcate or knob-like pedicel or pedicel lacking. Ascospores uni-seriate and partially overlapping, ovoid to narrowly ovoid, hyaline to pale brown, apiosporous, uniseptate near the lower end, barely constricted at the septum, verrucose. Asexual morph: Cladosporium or Fusicladium sp. (adapted from Sivanesan 1984).

Type species: Apiosporina collinsii (Schwein.) Höhn.

Notes: Apiosporina is characterised by gregarious, superficial, globose to subglobose ascomata, bitunicate to narrowly obclavate, cylindrical asci, with a short, thick, furcate or knob-like pedicel and ovoid to narrowly ovoid, hyaline to pale brown, apiosporous ascospores. Sivanesan (1984) reported the asexual morph of A. collinsii as Cladosporium sp. Braun et al. (2003) assigned this Cladosporium sp. as Fusicladium sensu lato. Winton et al. (2007) obtained single ascospore isolates of Apiosporina collinsii, provided LSU data and confirmed the congeneric relationship of Dibotryon morbosum with Apiosporina based on multigene analysis of SSU, LSU and ITS. Arx and Müller (1975) and Crous et al. (2007b) treated Dibotryon as a synonym of Apiosporina. Zhang et al. (2011) accepted a narrow concept of Fusicladium. Several authors treated Dibotryon as a synonym of Apiosporina (Arx & Müller 1975, Barr 1968, Crous et al. 2007a). Molecular data are available for Apiosporina collinsii (LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF-1, RPB2) and Apiosporina morbosa (LSU, SSU, ITS). Apiosporina is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Venturiaceae.
