Dimerosporiopsis

Dimerosporiopsis Henn., Hedwigia 40 (Beibl.): (173) (1901).

Index Fungorum number: IF 1588; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08832, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Caulicolous, causing some thickening and distortion of the affected parts, covering them with a dark brown to black mycelial. Mycelium extending through the cortex, giving rise to tufts of erect hyphae, which cover the stem with a turf-like growth. Ascomata pseudothecial, intermixed amongst the erect hyphae and attached to them at the base, globose or somewhat flattened, non-setose, collapsing and becoming cupulate when dry; wall rough externally, grossly verrucose, olivaceous, composed of several layers of irregularly polygonal cells 10–15 µm diam; without true ostiole, but with an irregular pore. Asci bitunicate, 8-spored, cylindrical, rounded at apex, tapering to a well-defined foot. Pseudoparaphyses hyaline, septate, filiform. Ascospores bi-seriate, uniseptate, pale olivaceous, clavate-ellipsoid, rounded at ends, slightly constricted at the septum, guttulate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hennings 1901).

Type species: Dimerosporiopsis engleriana (Henn.) Henn.

Notes: Dimerosporiopsis is characterised by pseudothecial ascomata, cylindrical asci rounded at apex, anduniseptate, pale olivaceous, clavate-ellipsoid ascospores. Dimerosporiopsis resembles Proventuria in having superficial pseudothecia with pseudoparaphyses, cylindrical asci however differs in having pluri-guttulate ascospores (Crous et al. 2020). The taxonomic placement of Dimerosporiopsis has been controversial. Dimerosporiopsis engleriana was previously known as Antennularia engleriana. Sivanesan (1974) placed Antennularia engleriana in Protoventuria. In the phylogenetic analysis of Crous et al. (2020), the type species of Protoventuria, Venturia rosae clusters with P. alpina close to Cadophora (Helotiales) and the authors suggested that the strains might be wrongly identified. Crous et al. (2020) did not consider Dimerosporiopsis as a synonym of Protoventuria but instead as a distinct genus in Venturiaceae. Only LSU and ITS data generated from DNA isolated directly from fungal material of D. engleriana collected on stems of Erica sp. (Ericaceae) by Crous et al. (2020) is available in GenBank. An attempt to recollect species of Dimerosporiopsis must be made to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
